Veterinarian WILL PHILIPS (35-49) runs the local chapter of the SPCA. He’s a widower with a nine year-old daughter, Dylan. Will believes in the sanctity of all animals, human and otherwise. He is determined to do everything in his power to keep animals alive, and to find them homes with families who will treat them well.
When Mrs. Kennicott dies and the police turn her dog Christmas over to the SPCA,
Will is shocked to learn that her will dictates the dog be put down. He refuses to carry out the will, and a legal battle ensues. Complicated by the fact that Will and his antagonist, Mickey, soon begin a nascent romantic relationship while opponents in court.
